What Size is Your King Size Bed?
By Elana Watson
When you purchased your king size bed you probably figured a king was a king and one size fits all. Well, just like there are exceptions to every rule, there are varying sizes of king-size beds. There are also differences in the terminology and not all kings are created equal. Purchasing new linens is expensive, and even though you can likely exchange a wrong size, eliminating the hassle of returning items is in your best interest. Especially if you shop for bedding online, you don’t want to have to pay for return shipping. Here’s what you need to know about king size beds so that choosing the proper size bedding for your bed will be less confusing. The Standard King Size Bed A standard king size bed is 80 inches long by 76 inches wide and this is the most common size that you’ll find in king size bedding. Before purchasing sheets, comforters and pillows for your bed it’s wise to measure the dimensions of your bed so that you can compare your measurements to those on the packaging or product description. If your bed has a pillow-top mattress you’ll also need to take that into account and choose deep-pocket fitted sheets. The California King A California king size bed is longer than a standard king, but slightly narrower: Its measurements come in at 84 inches long and 72 inches wide. Because the California king is longer than a standard it’s an excellent choice for tall people or those who prefer extra space at the foot of the bed. It also is better suited to a room that might be too crowded when trying to fit in the width of a standard size king. When shopping for California king size bedding, look for the words “California” on the packaging and check the dimensions. Additional Variations on the King-Size Theme As if two different sizes weren’t confusing enough, a Standard King and a California King are also known by other names. A standard king size bed may also be called an “Eastern king size bed” and a California king can be known as a “Western king size bed.” In additional to all these points of interest, you could have a European size king bed, which, when converted from centimeters to inches, measures 75 inches long and 60 inches wide. All of these factors need to be considered when you are looking at bedding descriptions because some manufacturers vary the definition of “standard” by a few inches. Therefore, it is essential that you know the exact measurements of your bed by width, length and, if there is a pillow top, by depth as well. No matter what size king bed you have, whenever you are purchasing new bedding be sure to keep all receipts and packaging so that you can return your purchase if needed. Make sure that you know the store’s policy and make your return within the allotted time period. Photo from Flickr - "King Size Bed" courtesy of lu_lu .
