Using Paint to Make More Space
By Angela Glancy
The effect that paint has on a room is amazing. It can make a space look larger, smaller, wider or taller. You can use paint to make a room look more inviting and better proportioned, and you can use paint to make a room look larger and more spacious. Light Colors In general light colors make a room look and feel more spacious. The reason that light colors enlarge a space is that lighter shades reflect more light, which makes the space feel both brighter and larger. Bright rooms have a vibrant feeling, and the room is filled with welcoming energy. Trim Colors When you are painting the trim, you can choose to paint it one of three ways. You can paint it lighter, darker or the same color as the walls. If you paint your trim a lighter color than the walls, it lets the walls recede, which tends to make the room look larger than it actually is. When you paint the trim darker than the walls, it tends to give the room a more traditional look, and when you paint the trim the same color as the walls, it simply makes it disappear. The undertone of the color also affects how large a space looks. For example, if you paint the trim in cool blue and green tones, the walls will seem to expand, and if you paint the trim with warm yellow and orange tones, it will cause the walls to close in and make the room feel smaller. Neutral Colors Neutral colors tend to open the walls up and make them feel larger, and pale pastel colors do the same. These colors create the illusion of a room being larger than it is, because they bring with them so much brightness. Pale colors actually fade away from the eye, and this is why the room feels larger than it actually is. Off White Ceilings Anytime that you paint a ceiling a pale color, it makes the room appear taller than it actually is. While a white ceiling gives a room height, it may not always be the best choice for a room. The problem with a white ceiling is that it makes any other color look darker when placed next to it. Pale walls may actually look darker next to a white ceiling than they would against a cream color ceiling. Designers deal with this by adding a little of the wall color to the white paint for the ceiling; this keeps the ceiling bright but lowers the contrast between the walls and the ceiling. This opens up the whole space visually and makes it feel larger. More Tricks And speaking of decorator tricks, another thing they do to make a room feel taller is to extend the wall color onto the ceiling about a foot. Paint the ceiling white, and after it is dry mark a one-foot border around the edge of the ceiling. Then paint the border around the ceiling and continue the color down the walls. When you are designing a room, if you keep your color scheme in mind, you can create the illusion of space. Then with light furnishings, light walls and light decor, your space will be very low contrast, making it feel considerably larger than it is. |

You really know your stuff, Angela. Nice intel. Did you do that room in the picture?
An interesting and informative read, I agree that colour is a very important part of our lives, helping to shape and shift our moods and feelings in our work and living environments. Without the use of colour and texture, our lives become mono-tone and uninteresting, leading to depression and irritability.
