Sewing a Shower Curtain for Custom Bathroom Design
By Elana Watson
When you walk into a bathroom, it is hard to miss the shower curtain. It is usually staring right at you, so what a great opportunity you have to create a custom look for your bathroom by creating your own shower curtain. Of course you could simply buy a shower curtain, but the custom ones all come with a hefty price tag. So you can sidestep dumping a lot of dollars into the project by simply making it yourself, and you get to pick the exact style, color and size that you wish. Measuring the Space There are a couple of different ways that you can measure for a shower curtain. First, you can measure the old curtain and make your new curtain the same size. Or you can measure the new vinyl liner cover and make your new curtain match that. Or you can simply measure the opening. For the width measure your shower opening horizontally, and then measure from the curtain rod halfway down the side of the tub. Once you have your length, add eight inches to each edge for the hem. Then for the width multiply your shower opening by one and one-half to get the optimum width for the space. Any one of these methods will get you an accurate measurement for your new, custom shower curtain. Selecting Fabric While standard bolts of fabric do not come wide enough for a shower curtain, you can piece two panels together to make your shower curtain. If you have a patterned material, allow a little extra so that you can match the pattern as you sew the two pieces together. If you do not want to splice your panels together, then you may rather use a bed sheet. They come in a myriad of beautiful prints, and they are wide enough to cover the entire shower opening. This is one of the most affordable ways to make a custom looking shower curtain. One of the biggest advantages to making your own shower curtain is that you have so many different fabrics, prints and textures from which to choose and it involves less sewing than using fabric. Sewing the Curtain After choosing your fabric, you are ready to start making your shower curtain. If you are making it from fabric, you will need to attach two panels together to make it wide enough taking care to match any patterns in the fabric as you splice the two panels together. If you use a bed sheet you will not have to sew any panels together, so you can simply begin to hem. Simply fold over the top edge one-inch, and then fold it again. For the bottom edge, fold your fabric over three inches and sew the hem. Then you will need to add grommets to the top edge of the curtain. Start inserting grommets about three inches in from the edge, and then install one about every six inches. You may also want to use your vinyl shower curtain liner to mark the grommet holes. If you do not want to install grommets in your curtain, then you can always sew buttonholes. So you can make your custom shower curtain look and feel exactly the way that you like it. |

Thank you for sharing, Elana. I worked for Singer Sewing Machine for a few years. Using a bed sheet is a great idea. Keep up the good work. Best wishes. Frederick
