Organization is Key in a Small Kitchen

By Elana Watson

If the kitchen in your house is small, that does not mean that it cannot be beautiful and functional. What it does mean is that you will have to be extra diligent in keeping it organized. With a little planning and forethought, you will find that it is not even difficult to keep your tiny kitchen functioning properly.

Clear Countertops
To keep a small kitchen functioning well, you need to keep your work surfaces clear, so that they can be used. That means that the first thing that you want to do is clear everything off of your counter. Throw away anything that you do not need, file anything that needs to be filed, and store your small appliances in the cabinet directly under the countertop where you will use them. If you have appliances that you only use occasionally, store them in another room or in the pantry. Then if more clutter threatens your countertops, simply throw it away. Soon enough, clutter will find another place to congregate.

Use your Walls
Now that you have plenty of useable counter space, try to make the best use of all of your wall space. You can install a pot rack and store your pots on it. Everything will be handy, and you will have freed up some valuable cabinet space. At the same time you can use decorative platters as artwork and hang them on your walls, so you are storing them in plain sight. Add elements like spice racks, racks for cooking utensils or a wine rack to make all of your vertical space work for you. Add some floating shelves on your kitchen walls, which you can use to house your cookbooks and any decorative items that you may have like a canister set.

Clear Cabinets
Next, turn your attention to your cabinets. Depending on how much cabinet space you have in your kitchen, you may want to go through your cabinets one at a time. If you do not have too many cabinets though, you may as well get your cabinets reorganized all at once. Take everything out of your cabinets, and only put back the things that you use. If you have not used it in a while get rid of it. Granted you will have holiday or specialty cooking items that you may only use occasionally; store them in your least accessible cabinets or in another room, or the basement or garage. Then pack up everything that you no longer need and sell it, trash it, or give it away.

Create Work Zones
If you really want to have your kitchen work well, organize your room in zones. Organizing in this fashion keeps you from having to travel in circles in your kitchen when you are cooking and cleaning. For example, store your dishes and glassware by the sink and dishwasher. That way when they are clean you can put them away without even taking a step. By thinking of how you use each area of your kitchen and then arranging your tools that way, you can make your room work well and look wonderful.

Thank you for sharing these tips on organization, Elana.
Too many times, we put things into cabinets or closets and don't use them ever. We could help many charities by cleaning out those items.
Best wishes.

CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY

Hi Frederick,

Glad you find my tips useful. Yes, you are right, items we never or rarely use tend to pile up fast in our cabinets and closets. Helping charities is a great idea. Hope many will follow your advice.
