Liven Up your Great Room with Fresh Decorating Ideas

By Angela Glancy

After freshly decorating a room it is hard to imagine that you will ever be tired of it, but sooner rather than later, you will probably find yourself pondering ways to update and change the look of your room just to give it a little pick me up. There are several things that you can do to freshen up the look of any room, and you can do it on a very affordable budget.

New Paint
Absolutely nothing freshens up a room as quickly as a fresh coat of paint. You can change the color or leave it as it is, and either way your room will look fresh and bright when you are done. You may opt to paint only a focal wall to give your room a whole new look, or you may opt to change the color all together. Both choices will give you that little change that you were looking for.

Rearrange Furniture
If you are tired of looking at your great room the way it is, simply rearrange the furniture and get a whole new look. This change costs you absolutely nothing at all, and it can make a huge difference in your room. If you have your furniture arranged around the edge of the room, break it up into several smaller conversational groupings instead. You can simply rearrange what is already in the room, or you can swap out furniture with other rooms in the house. Switch out a coffee table for a steamer trunk to add a little more rustic look to the room. Move one of your conversational groupings by the fireplace, and on the other side of the room set up a reading corner with a comfortable chair and a floor lamp. Add an area rug to define the television area and add some new plants to nooks and crannies throughout the room. Watch the traffic patterns that travel through the great room and set your conversational areas around them so you do not have people walking through your conversation. By simply rearranging the furniture that you already have, you get a whole, new, fresh look to your room, and it costs you not a dime.

New Focal Point
If you are tired of looking at the same old room, just change the focal point in the room. You can always add a new piece of art to create a new focal point, but you can also add a new focal wall without spending a lot of money. One of the easiest ways to add a new focal wall is to use paint. Simply paint one wall in contrast to the others, and there it is - instant focus. Then mount your flat screen TV on that wall, and you have your artwork. Now flank your TV screen with four photos, pictures or prints, and you have a picture grouping that creates a beautiful focal point for the room. As a side benefit, you basically made your TV invisible at the same time by hiding it in plain sight.

Brighten It Up
If your room is looking a little dingy, you may want to try updating the lighting in the room. Add some good, overhead lighting by putting in recessed or track lighting. Then you can add wall sconces for dramatic back lighting, and you can add a floor lamp and table lamp for task lighting. Now you can brighten up the whole room, enjoy ambient lighting, or quietly read a book in the corner. If you add a few candles and a dimmer switch, you are ready for pretty much anything that may happen in your great room.

Painting one wall a different color is a radical idea. One tends to paint all the ways the same color. I could have sworn doing otherwise is illegal.
