Improve your Dining Room with Double-Duty Furniture
By Elana Watson
Any room, especially a small one, can gain functionality and space with double duty furniture: A wicker chest in a living room can work as a coffee table and as extra storage, for example. Using furniture in this way saves space and money and in a dining room where space may be at a premium, thinking ahead and using double-duty furniture will make the room more usable, spacious and practical. From ‘Table for Four’ to ‘Table for Twelve’ The first place to look for space and versatility is the dining room table; a table with removable or collapsible leaves can give you all the room you need 90% of the time when it may just be two, three or four people sitting down to dinner. This leaves your dining room open and spacious. But on holidays and other occasions when you may be serving eight or more people, expanding the table to accommodate everyone lets you gather together in comfort and style. Keep extra folding chairs stored in a closet or basement; many newer versions look way better than the cold metal chairs you remember from your high school auditorium. You can even make or buy festive or color coordinated slip covers for your extra chairs. Storage Units, Shelving and Bookcases There are many compact ways to add storage to a dining room. Small consoles with closed door or open shelving, or a combination of the two, let you tuck away linens, napkins, holiday serving pieces behind closed doors and the open shelving can be used display dishware, pitchers, antique plates or your heirloom Venetian glass espresso set. Even open shelves units like bookcases are handy: Small items or those that you don’t want out in the open can be stored in attractive baskets on the shelves that are tied with grosgrain ribbon that matches your décor. Cookbooks, framed art or photographs, glassware or anything you’d like to display can be artistically arranged. Wall shelves are a great option for increasing storage and display space without using up floor area. A Handy Storage Bench An attractive storage bench that works with your dining room style offers extra seating in a pinch and a wealth of extra storage under the lid. You can keep the bench against one wall or along the length of the table for an eclectic look in your dining room. Seat cushions and pillows in opulent or casual styles make the bench look as well-dressed as the rest of the room. Storage benches are ideal for housing oversize serving pieces, linen, candles, and out-of-season decorative items so they’re close at hand yet out of sight when not needed. This also frees up other closets in the house. Repurpose a Chest of Drawers A small chest of drawers is a practical and stylish addition to the dining room. One with a small footprint won’t infringe much on the space but gives you a stack of storage for party supplies, flatware, serving utensils, even items for the kitchen that aren’t used everyday. The flat top gives you an ideal spot for a beverage center, serving area or set up station when entertaining. |
