How to Decorate a Bedroom with Mirrors
By Angela Glancy
Mirrors are essential for a bedroom because that’s the place where you get dressed each morning before you face the world and you need a mirror to put your best face forward. However practical they may be, mirrors are really so much more. Mirrors are probably one of the least utilized decorating tools employed by amateur home decorators, yet they can pack a wallop of a decorative punch: Use them to make a room feel bright and more spacious and to enhance the best features and accents of the room. Here are a few tips for decorating a bedroom with mirrors; try one or several and you’ll increase the wow factor of any bedroom space. 1. Use mirrors to add spaciousness: Strategically placed mirrors make a bedroom feel larger and of course, larger mirrors have the greatest impact when trying to create this illusion. Mirrors trick your eye into thinking that the reflected space is part of the room. An easy trick that will double the visual space of a bedroom is to use mirrored doors on closets; not only does this make the room feel bigger, it gives you a handy spot to check your appearance from head to toe. Or use a mirror instead of a headboard to create a wonderful spacious focal point at the head of the bed. 2. Maximize light for an airy effect: In a bedroom that is short on natural light, mirrors have the great advantage of amplifying what available light there is. Place a mirror where it will catch outdoor light from a window; usually the wall opposite the window or adjacent to it are your best bets. After dark, mirrors will enhance the effect of candles and lamps, giving the room ambiance and additional light by reflection. 3. Accentuate the positives: Mirrors can be used to make works or art or any attractive features of the room more prominent. Use one behind a sculpture or across from a painting or metal wall art to make the piece more visible from another angle. Stand a tall mirror on the floor to reflect moldings and trim or a beautiful outdoor view that give the bedroom distinctive personality and style. 4. Mirrors as art: Wall mirrors come in a virtually unlimited range of styles, shapes, sizes and finishes so you can use them to accent any style bedroom. Wrought iron, distressed or glossy woods, beveled glass, elaborate Rococo frames – the sky is the limit and you can choose a gorgeous mirror to work as a focal point on any wall. Group it with works of art, candle wall sconces, metal wall art or whatever you please to create a unique, eye-appealing display. 5. Create a mirror collage: Once you start looking at the variety of wall mirrors available in stores, online and through antique shops and vintage sources, you may find that combining a grouping is particularly appealing. You can choose from modern geometric or round shapes, scrolled, framed or frameless mirrors, or amass a collection of vintage hand mirrors to create a one-of-a-kindcollage on the wall.
