How to Customize Stock Shelving to Work for your Closet
By Angela Glancy
There is a reason why many building and home improvement materials are made in stock sizes; stock sizes save money for manufactures which thereby saves money for the consumer. Standard sizes make life much more convenient for the consumer; for instance, a new faucet will fit the predrilled holes on your kitchen sink. Simply remove the old faucet and drop in the new one. Closet organizing systems are manufactured in standard sizes as well, and they are extremely useful and easily adapted to fit your closet. Closet shelving comes in widths of 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 feet. You just need to purchase the one that matches your closet’s width or depth. It’s not uncommon that a closet will fall somewhere between these dimensions; in that case, purchase the shelf that is the next size up and cut it to fit. When you considering shelving to organize your closet, consider how you use the space. For instance, will you be hanging longer items like coats and dresses as well as short shirts and jacket and do you need space for folded items like sweaters? By considering the length of items you need to hang, you can stagger the shelving to accommodate all your clothing efficiently. The most budget-friendly shelving is the plastic-coated wire shelving that offers hanging space below and stackable space on the shelf. Here’s an example of how to customize this sort of shelving for a four foot closet. If you install one shelf about 12 inches down from the ceiling of the closet, you’ll have room to tuck rarely used items on top of the shelf and have hanging space for short items like pants and shirts. Measure the space that you need to for those items to hang freely then install a second shelf below the first shelf. You are going to cut this second shelf shorter, about 3 feet wide, and install it below the top shelf, allowing clearance for your pants and shirts. Now in the left over space between this short shelf and the wall, you have room to hang dresses and longer coats and you can hang additional items from the shorter shelf. If you have a need to store folded items, you can mount the short shelf low enough to give you space on top of it. You can install as many shelves about 12 inches apart as your closet will accommodate and you’ll have plenty of room for folded sweaters in winter, or short and t-shirts in summer. If your closet is deep, you might opt for shelves on one side wall with hanging space on one half or three-quarters of the front wall of the closet. I once had a very deep closet under a staircase and the back of the closet was totally wasted space. To make use of the space we installed a second clothing rack behind the front rack, and while it wasn’t convenient to reach the hanging rod in the back of the closet everyday, it was a great place to store out of season clothing in garment bags. Twice a year, spring and fall, I’d simply switch out one rack with the other. Spending a little time thinking about what you need to store and how you need to access it is the key to using stock closet organizers in an efficient manner that works perfectly for your storage needs.
