How to Choose the Perfect Color for your Kitchen

By Angela Glancy

There are many ways to go when choosing color for a kitchen and determining what’s best for you is a matter of deciding what mood you wish to create. You also need to consider the color of cabinets, appliances, flooring and countertops. In the end, some people go for dramatic bold color accented by rich toned woods and gleaming stainless steel. Other opt for pure clean white appliances, tile and cabinetry accented polished nickel fixtures to bring a pristine classic touch to a kitchen. Your other consideration when choosing kitchen colors is how your choices will complement the look and style of your home in general and how it will flow with surrounding spaces.

Here are some suggestions on how to capture the look and mood that you desire for your hardworking kitchen:

A Playful, Modern Look
If you want your kitchen to be energizing and inspiring to the creative cook in your soul, choose vibrant shades like sunflower yellow or cobalt blue. Bold colors are outstanding with white appliances and cabinets, giving a fresh-as-a-daisy appeal to the kitchen. You can add these colors to the walls or in smaller doses through tile backsplashes or murals.

Warm and Welcoming
Warm shades of red and yellow will encourage people to relax and hang out in the kitchen while you cook and these colors are ideal for cooks who love to entertain while they whip up a culinary delight in front of their friends. Neutral shades and wood tones will help balance the heat of the colors and keep your kitchen inviting.

Casually Relaxed
Shades of green will keep make your kitchen a restful respite from the demands of your day. Crisp shades of apple or lime green contribute a refreshed feeling and mellower tones like olive green or sage invite relaxation. Green pairs well with yellow, blue, tan, rust or burgundy, so there are many directions you can go with green as your dominant color.

Pure White
A clean polished kitchen in white is a classic choice that always looks unsoiled and bright. White is easy to keep clean because stains show up easily and it makes a great background for colored dishware, accessories and bowls of fresh fruits and veggies.

Romantic Bliss
If your idea of a good time is spending an evening at home whipping up a good meal and relaxing in the kitchen with the love of your life, an elegant kitchen with warm cherry woods and formal colors like black, aubergine and silver may be just the ticket. Wine racks, candle holders and wall sconces, and comfortable seating can make your kitchen more inviting than the most romantic bistro in town.

Tips for Coordinating Colors

• Create continuity from the kitchen to adjoining spaces by repeating colors in, for instance, the dining room, back into the kitchen. For example, a shade of blue that appears in dining room wall art can be repeated in kitchen window treatments.

• Coordinate paint and accessories to work with fixtures that will be in place for a long time, such as the floor, countertops and appliances.

• Balance the colors in your kitchen by mixing neutral shades with warm and cool colors. This will keep the space from being either too stimulating or too relaxing.
