From Extra Bedroom to Laundry/Bathroom Space
By Elana Watson
When you are updating your home, turning a spare bedroom into a bathroom and laundry room may be a great way to add convenience and value to your home. This update is especially handy if your spare bedroom is located with other bedrooms in your home. Most of your household laundry is generated from the bedrooms, so having your laundry room located close by is a huge bonus. With just a little planning and some rudimentary construction skills, you can convert a single bedroom into a shared bathroom and laundry room. Things to Consider If you have a choice as to which bedroom is the spare room, there are a couple of things that you want to consider. First, be mindful of where your plumbing is in relation to the room, because the closer the water lines are to the room, the easier it is to add the necessary plumbing. If you adding a full bath with a tub, make sure that your floor is solid enough to support the weight of a filled tub. Some older homes will not have the proper supports in the bedroom floors to hold that much weight, so rather than risk a cave in, do a little research. Start by drawing out your proposed floor plan to scale using graph paper. Think about how you want to place your cabinetry, and how you want to divide the space between laundry room and bathroom. This is also a good time to look into what permits you will need before beginning your project, so you can make sure that you get the proper clearance and inspections as you project unfolds. Professional Plumbing Unless you are an experienced plumber it is a good idea to hire a contractor for your bathroom project. You will have to lay pipe, install drains and fixtures, and if it is not done properly, you can cause a lot of damage to your home. Plumbing is one of the elements of construction that really has to be done correctly, so hiring a professional to do the job is well worth the investment. Tile is Stylish and Sensible Using tile in your new combination laundry room and bathroom is a sensible and stylish choice. You can choose neutral tile that will work with any color scheme, and for the flooring look for tiling choices that will not be slippery when wet. Even if you have never laid tile before, it is a project that you can do simply by carefully following instructions. However, if you do not think that you are patient or persistent enough to get the job done right, you may want to consider hiring a professional to install your tile. Organizing the Space After you have all of the base work completed in your new room, and your tile is installed, your walls painted and your fixtures in, you can begin to add accessories to the room. Make your room stylish and make it functional by keeping clutter to a minimum; cabinets and shelving will keep the room organized and useable. This type of conversion is a big project, and it adds a great deal of functionality to your home. While you will sacrifice an extra bedroom to the cause, you will increase the value and usability of your home. Get help where you need it, and have fun doing the parts that are in your range of skills.
