Creating Stunning Stairway Focal Points

Many newer homes are built with large central stairways that can be seen throughout the house. The staircase itself provides a focal point for the house, but they are often ignored when it comes time to decorate. With just a little effort, a stairway can really come to life. Runners
You can instantly add a little pop of color to your stairs by laying down a carpet runner. Not only pretty to look at, a runner will actually save your stairway from wear and tear. One thing that you do need to be sure of when you lay a runner down is that it is installed correctly so that the stairs can be traveled safely. Accents
Another way add a little drama to your stairwell is to paint the wall going up the stairs a bolder color than your regular wall color. By saving your bold color for the stairwell, you are creating a focal point in your house, and since the space is tall the bolder color will not seem overwhelming. Or you could use wallpaper on this wall to add texture and interest. If your decor is eclectic or funky, you may want to consider actually painting your stairs themselves to add drama or whimsy. Accessories
After your area is painted, you can add accessories to the walls and any ledges along the stairwell. You can stair step pictures or photos up the wall, and you can display baskets or decorative boxes at the landings. These baskets are also functional in that you can fill them with items that need to go upstairs, and then you can take them in a single trip. If you are going to merchandise along the edge of the stairs in this manner, make sure that you always leave ample space for people to walk up and down the stairs as well. If your steps are narrow you may want to create a small display at the top and bottom of the stairs instead. Lighting
Light is also a great way to accent your stairway. Usually the lighting in a stairway is bright enough to be save, so if you fixture is ordinary, you can upgrade it to get a much more dramatic effect in your stairwell. You can also add a color tint to your light bulb to create an interesting ambience for the stair area. By adding a mirror at the top of the stairs or on a landing, you can also bounce some light around and lighten up the area, which will make it also seem a little roomier. Holiday Decor
One of the best things about a stairwell is that you can deck it out for the holidays. You have height and it is already centrally located, so you can add your touches of red and green for a festive effect. Cascading pine bough tied with big red bows at regular intervals is a classic look. If your children have created a colorful paper chain, this makes a beautiful addition to your stairway. While Christmas is the most popular holiday for decorating, you can also dress your staircase for all other holidays and occasions as well.
