Creating a Rustic Cottage Fireplace
By Angela Glancy
A fireplace is a natural fit for country or rustic decorating. Both styles add a warm and homey touch to your fireplace. While rustic and country styles are not necessarily one in the same, for this decorating aesthetic, rustic country style is being considered rather than traditional country style. As we consider more rustic or primitive styles, a fireplace is the perfect spot to use this decorating style, because fire is a very basic element. This elemental look can be achieved without breaking the bank, and it will give your room a warm and inviting feel. Neutral Backdrop To get a country look for your fireplace consider using all natural materials when putting your design together. Of course wood is a natural element when decorating a fireplace, and stone and textiles can be unfinished and rough. If you are using elements that are a little more refined, like smooth stone, be careful not to get too refined, because you will begin to lose the rustic appeal of your decoration. You can use a roughly woven runner over your mantelpiece to add a little color to it. If you have an impressive, roughly hewn wooden mantel, you may rather leave it bare and not cover the texture. For interest over the mantel, you may wish to hang a single piece of primitive art or even an old, handmade quilt. You could also hang a seasonal wreath made from natural elements like twigs, flowers, vines or evergreen cuttings. Any natural element, such as deer antlers or a wood burning wall art, can be used to create a rustic focal point over the fireplace. Natural Textures Natural earth and wood tones are typical to rustic style, while accents can be bolder natural tones like cranberry, forest green and deep sky blue. Pull these brighter colors into your mix of accents on the mantle. To add a little more interest you may want to display an old oil lamp or wrought iron sconces. You may prefer a couple of brass candleholders with some hand dipped candles to add a little glow to the mantelpiece. Adding pottery or wicker baskets filled with pine cones can finish off a beautiful display. Adding some cast iron cookware to the hearth may also add to the rustic appeal of the fireplace. A large copper pot to hold wood along with a wrought iron fireplace set can dress the hearth. To hang pictures over the fireplace consider family photos, framed art or outdoor photos framed in rough wooden frames that tie them to the mantel. Cozy Blankets, Antiques, and Hand Crafted Rugs To make the whole area more cozy and inviting, add a braided rug in front of the hearth. This will add warmth to the floor as well as a little splash of color. An antique wooden rocking chair can be pulled up to the side of the hearth with a soft quilt thrown casually over the back of it. If you have room add a wooden trunk beside the hearth to hold additional blankets and maybe even some board games. Using a rustic design for your fireplace will allow you and your family to spend countless hours together enjoying each other’s company.
