Creating a Cottage Style Living Room

By Angela Glancy

Adding cottage charm to a living room is one way to make the room more comfortable and inviting. There are many different looks that all say cottage, so it is up to you to decide which cottage look is for you.

Simply Shabby Chic
A decidedly feminine cottage look, shabby chic is a very diverse style. It is typically open and light with understated elegance. This style generally has a hint of romance to it, and it evokes a well-worn and cherished aesthetic. Shopping for this style is great if you are on a budget, because the best sources for shabby chic accessories are thrift shops, flea markets and garage sales. You want to find pieces that look old and well loved; so they can be worn, but they must be in good repair. Generally the color palette is light and uses a lot of pastels in every hue. Slipcovers and wicker are common furniture choices. Lacquered tables and kitchen chairs, and overstuffed ottomans round out the look. Accessories include cherished collections of little treasures, a bowl of fresh cut and colorful flowers. An old chandelier for lighting and some artwork with a floral theme finish the look of the shabby chic living room.

English Cottage
When decorating in an English cottage style, think neat and precise. While the style is akin to shabby chic, it is not quite as feminine. The style is unpretentious and comfortable, and the idea of “found” items is still very prevalent. Color palettes reflect nature, and can be either dark or light including sky blues and slate blues, grassy greens and forest greens, earthen reds and barn reds. While whicker and rattan furniture is popular in this style, so is overstuffed and comfortable furniture. This style is a little more gender neutral than the shabby chic style as it has a very down to earth, comfortable and practical feel to it. While this style is comfortable it is also uncluttered giving the English cottage living room a little more of a utilitarian look that the shabby chic living room.

Vintage Influence
Regardless of which direction you choose to go with your cottage style living room, you will want to include some vintage accents. Re-purposing furniture to use in your living room can add interest and function to the room. For example, by taking an antique armoire and turning it into a television cabinet, not only do you hide all of the unsightly cords of your television set, but you also add the beautiful lines of an antique armoire to your living room. A charming, old tea set, rustic window boxes and old lace curtains add a nice touch to the room. An antique vase brimming with freshly cut flowers from the garden, and some garden inspired art displayed on the wall help to dress this living room in the cottage style. Some colorful throw rugs and brightly colored accessories and pillows complete this cottage inspired living room.
