Basics of Recognizing English Country Style

By Elana Watson

Maybe when you think of your youth, you reminisce about long-term relationships and the decor that encircled you when you were growing up. There's only one home design style for you: English country, and here's how you might go about decorating:

Start by planting a flower garden outside your house and set potted blooms near your door. A home decoration without flowers couldn't conceivably be in the English style. But the floral accents must not stop at the threshold. The garden feel is brought inside with hanging wall vases, tree wall art and pitchers and vases overflowing with sweet-smelling blooms and freshly cut flowers.

Don't paint the interior walls, paper them. Yes, wallpaper. And the design? Floral, naturally. What about the accessories? From images that depict English horsemanship and the hunt to floral wall art, metal wall decor, and more, this decor style thirsts for accessorizing.

Select the right furniture. English country style necessitates tokens like lowboys, highboys and secretaries to be set in an elaborate and flowery style; sofas and armchairs embellished in leather, velvet and tweed are common. Other accents might include a Queen Anne or Sheraton dining table, or an overstuffed Chesterfield sofa, depending on your budget.

You might want to have a corner that is furnished with a solid wood bookshelf with glass doors and brass accents that is, of course, overflowing with finely bound books. Yes, brass is employed, never chrome or any metal that shines. High gloss paint is likewise not seen in English country styled homes. Ages of polishing and dusting will often make a peculiar finish on wooden surfaces.

A sensation of timelessness and functionality combine with stylishness in real English country style. From the furniture within to the house itself, choice craftsmanship is shown and it is evident that eternal appeal and durability are predominant. Even in the brass accented doors, this feel is manifest.

Use the appropriate colors. No matter what time of year one enters, a sense of autumn is in the air, and the smell of wood and leather render a welcoming effect. Exquisitely upholstered armchairs are set by the hearth, and the combination of floral and an aged rural look makes you want to sit down and stay awhile.

A hearth is de rigueur. The conventional fireplace found in English country decor affords the homeowner a good reason to show worn and well-used brass fireplace tools. One will oftentimes see leather bridles, candles and horse brass displayed to complete the ambience of English country.

Perchance one of the strongest influences on English country style has been the weather in Britain. This explains the want to be warm, watertight, and cozy to counter the cold weather.

The weather demands that the house be warm, waterproof and comfy in order to counter the chill. This means that there is no real surprise when you find out that English country style banks on comfort.

Use draperies for the windows, never blinds. Rather, drapes that match the wallpaper are typically seen. Just as you will never discover blank walls in an English country home, you will never see blinds either.

Cosmetic pieces should be exhibited in abundance. Select ornamental items that have a feel of being passed down through the generations. Always, English country homes exude a feeling of clutter. Collectibles, antiques, petit point, brass antiques, metal wall art, and leaded glass are routine. At no point, however, should one be afraid to walk through them, dreading he might tip over the china or the fine porcelain figures on tabletops.
